HBO's Watchmen Lands Emmy Nomination For Outstanding Special Visual Effects

HBO’s Watchmen has been nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects and 25 other awards at the prime-time 2020 Emmy Awards.

The list of nominees, which was unveiled on July 28, saw Watchmen bringing in the most nominations of any series with 26 nods.

In the Outstanding Special Visual Effects category, the Watchmen team (including Overall VFX Supervisor Erik Henry, VFX Producer Matt Robken, VFX Production Manager Ashley J. Ward and others) faces Lost in Space (Netflix), The Mandalorian (Disney+), Stranger Things (Netflix) and Westworld (HBO).

Monsters Aliens Robots Zombies (MARZ) is proud to have worked with Erik Henry on creating one of the most recognizable effects on the show: the Looking Glass mask worn by Wade Tillman (played by actor Tim Blake Nelson).

MARZ Senior VFX Supervisor Nathaniel Larouche and his team helped to conceptualize and bring to life the iconic Rorschach-like mask, which earned MARZ one of the company’s two 2020 Visual Effects Society (VES) award nominations.

The reflective and realistic mask has been discussed frequently in the media, most recently in a Yahoo interview with Erik Henry as well as a feature on the series in the latest issue of Cinefex magazine. The pipeline behind creating the realistic mask was also the subject of an in-depth interview on beforesandafters.

MARZ’s work on the Looking Glass mask can be seen in the reel below:
